THE CRY OF AGES
By Fr. Casmir Odundo
Today, the noise of the world is silenced by the cry of a baby,
Yes, the baby cries!
Just as He cried at creation,
And brought everything into being!
The baby cries as the baby Moses cried, in the basket on the sea,
And attracted the princess' attention!
The baby cries as the Israelites cried in the midst of the Red Sea!
And God came to their refuge!
The baby cried in the cry of the prophets,
When they called Israel back to repentance!
The baby’s cry is anticipated by the last prophet’s cry from the wilderness,
Prepare a way for the Lord!
Yes, the baby cries, in the manger in Bethlehem,
And the angels in heaven sing!
The baby cries and the wise men travel from far,
Following a star!
Yes, the baby cried during the three years of preaching,
And the world wouldn’t listen!
Yes, the baby cried, when he saw where Lazarus was buried,
And brought him back to life!
Yes, the baby cried when He saw his Mother cry,
At the foot of the cross!
Yes the baby cried, when He breathed his last,
It is finished!
Yes, the baby cries,
In the poor and the suffering!
In the neglected and abandoned,
Yes He still cries!
Yes the baby cries,
In the inaudible cries of aborted children in the womb!
Yes the baby cries too,
Within us, in our own cries of joy or sadness!
The baby cries, in the depth of the manger of our hearts,
Our conscience!
Oh, that Saving Cry of Ages!
